about cmc

I am an alpha geek. I'm part code monkey, part former MacGuru, part Scotty, part Geordi, and very definitely one part Simon. I also have an alter-ego who coaches swimming. I love my family and friends, and am glad to be able to count both on more than one hand (and not just because it means I have more than one hand, mind you).

Want to catch my attention? Have an opinion about something, especially swimming, Apple, free and open-source software, Rubik's Cube, Linguistics, or gifted education. Chances are good that I have an opinion about one or more of those topics at any given time as well.

I try to stay up-to-date with the latest fads as well... or something. See, I even have a Facebook banner. Don't laugh too hard:

Anyway, that's all for now. If you like what you read, read on... if not, don't (it won't break my heart). Enjoy!

Welcome to swim.234west.org!

In addition to coaching and swimming with Academy Bullets Masters, DrCoachChris is currently working with IMSA Aquatics in the Girls' Swimming and Diving program. Locally, Chris is the President of the Illinois Masters Swimming Association (aka the Illinois LMSC) and was the winner of the 2009 ILMSA Coach of the Year award. Nationally, he is the Chair of the U.S. Masters Swimming Coaches Committee.

Workouts on this site were written by DrCoachChris unless otherwise credited in the specific entry. If you're looking for a workout and can't find something you like here, email me and I'll see what I can do.

Long-term online coaching, season planning, and evaluation services are available by request. Email me for details!

"... and thanks for your support."

Not only was I elected ILMSA chair (my term begins 2009-06-01), but I was also selected as the ILMSA Coach of the Year for 2009. Thanks to everyone who nominated me, voted for me, or otherwise showed your support for me on both of these great honors!

Vote.

Go out and vote. I don't care who you vote for, as long as you vote the way YOU want. Just get out and exercise your right to participate in the democratic process. Notice I'm not telling you whom I'm voting for, or for whom you should vote. Just go vote. Of course, this presupposes you're of legal voting age and have not already voted... but that's another story. The rest of you, go vote now. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200... and remember, if you live in Illinois, the polls close at 7pm. Good thing, too... I'm not gonna get to go vote until after practice.

wow...

I wrote last year that Dara Torres did something special. Little did I know that she'd outdo herself in grand fashion by winning the 100 free at Olympic Trials. That's right, a forty-one year old qualified for a fifth Olympic team. It's pretty impressive to think that at 41, you can do lifetime bests in the sprints at that level. It makes me wish I had the scratch to hire a team of stretchers, trainers, and nannies. In any case, my hat's off to you again, Dara. Go show the Chinese what drug-free and fast looks like... just don't forget to wear your contacts so you can see the scoreboard. I hope that Tessa makes it to China to make an appearance on the medal stand.

Some workouts I put together for Swimming World a few months ago have become the May 2008 Masters workout card. Titled "Emphasis on Diversity," the workouts represent 5 days of diverse training, as we like to do in the middle of hard training at Academy Bullets Masters. Check it out on p.32 (the left page of the centerfold)!
